About Us

Welcome to MealsWizard – Where Magic Meets Cooking!

Hi, I’m Chef Michael Sterling, and I believe that cooking should feel like magic, not a chore. After spending over 20 years in professional kitchens and teaching thousands of home cooks, I discovered something important: the difference between someone who loves cooking and someone who dreads it often comes down to having the right guidance, confidence, and a few “secret spells” (also known as reliable techniques).

That’s why I created MealsWizard – to transform your kitchen into a place where delicious meals happen effortlessly, even on your busiest weeknights.

My Culinary Journey

My love affair with food began in my grandmother’s kitchen in Chicago, where I learned that the best recipes aren’t just about ingredients – they’re about bringing people together. After graduating from the Culinary Institute of America, I worked in fine dining restaurants across New York and San Francisco, earning recognition for seasonal cuisine and innovative comfort food.

But here’s what changed everything: I started teaching weekend cooking classes for busy professionals and families. I watched people struggle with the same questions over and over: “How do I make this faster?” “What if I don’t have that ingredient?” “Why doesn’t mine look like yours?”

That’s when I realized my true calling wasn’t in exclusive restaurants – it was in making exceptional cooking accessible to everyone.

What Makes MealsWizard Different

Real recipes for real life. Every recipe on this site is tested in a home kitchen (mine!) using equipment and ingredients you can actually find at your local grocery store. No fancy gadgets required, no impossible-to-find ingredients, no pretentious techniques.

Time-saving magic. I specialize in recipes that deliver maximum flavor with minimal fuss. Whether you have 15 minutes or an hour, you’ll find recipes that fit your schedule without compromising on taste.

Beginner-friendly guidance. Clear step-by-step instructions, helpful photos, and pro tips that answer questions before you even ask them. I remember what it’s like to not know the difference between sauté and sear – and I’ll never assume you do either.

Substitutions and flexibility. Out of an ingredient? No problem. I always include smart substitutions and variations so you can adapt recipes to what’s in your pantry.

My Cooking Philosophy

I believe cooking should be:

  • Approachable – No recipe should intimidate you
  • Flexible – Adapt to what you have and what you like
  • Delicious – Life’s too short for bland food
  • Fun – If you’re not enjoying it, we’re doing something wrong

A Little More About Me

When I’m not testing recipes (which, let’s be honest, is most of the time), you’ll find me at local farmers’ markets searching for the perfect heirloom tomato, experimenting with fermentation projects that occasionally terrify my family, or teaching my two kids that vegetables can actually taste amazing.

I live in Portland, Oregon with my wife Sarah, our kids Emma and Jack, and our rescue dog Basil (yes, named after the herb). My weekend ritual involves making sourdough bread while listening to classic rock – it’s my version of meditation.

Fun facts:

  • I’ve cooked in 47 states (still missing Alaska, Hawaii, and Vermont – working on it!)
  • My favorite ingredient is garlic (no apologies)
  • I once won a chili cook-off with a secret ingredient: dark chocolate
  • I drink way too much coffee and believe breakfast is the most important meal to get right

Recipe Testing & Development

Every recipe on MealsWizard goes through rigorous testing. I test each recipe at least three times in my home kitchen, adjusting measurements, timing, and techniques until it’s absolutely foolproof. Many recipes are also tested by my community of home cooks who provide feedback on clarity, ingredient accessibility, and results.

My Promise to You:

  • Accurate cooking times and yields
  • Tested ingredient measurements
  • Clear, detailed instructions
  • Honest difficulty ratings
  • Nutritional information when relevant
  • Responsive to your questions and feedback
